Hey my Crocheters!
It is Granny Square Month and then there was that Taylor Swift dress, featuring the Granny Stitch. So let's dive into it.
The Granny Square is associated with the 1970s. You can see it in blankets, clothing, and home decor. It was a very popular motif at that time. For example, Paul McCartney was wearing a Granny Square Vest in the music video for the newly released Beatles song, "Now and Then". It was amazing! I would love to recreate it some day.
The history of the Granny Square is even older than the 1970s. I have seen dates from my google search showing that it was debuted in the 1880s! The Granny Square is relatively simple and only uses a single stitch. It typically uses double crochet (in US terms) starting with an even number of stitches at the center, and growing in a round using chains to create a square shaped panel. These panels are sewn/joined together to create blankets, garments, pillows, and more.
You don't only have to use the Granny Stitch to make a square. It can be used on its own in the row or round. This is clear from the Taylor Swift dress which was not a Granny Square. The Granny Stitch is a very simple stitch that is a cluster of three double crochet stitches. All you need to know to create the Granny Stitch is how to double crochet, in US terms, and chain. That is really it!
The Granny Stitch is versatile and can be used to create anything you can dream of. I am personally working on two designs right now that feature the Granny Stitch. I finally finished the samples last week. I still have to block them, photo them, and write the patterns (followed by tech editing). I hope to have that finished this month for an August release, fingers crossed!!
I will have a Youtube tutorial for the Granny Stitch in both the round and row posting this week.
Stay tuned and happy hooking!
