Hey My Crocheters!
I want to talk about the basic crochet stitches today. It is really great that all of crochet is based on the basic stitches. For example, a bobble stitch is made of a cluster of a basic stitch. Mosaic Crochet uses Single and Double crochet stitches.
Check out below for a list of basic stitches that can be used toward most techniques. I am going to include the chart symbols that I found on the Craft Yarn Council at the end of this post. You can also find tutorials for all of these basic stitches on my Youtube Channel.
Single Crochet (Sc): This stitch is the simplest and smallest stitch that can be made. All that is needed to make a single crochet is the to insert your hook into a stitch or chain, yarn over, pull through the stitch, yarn over, and pull through two loops on the hook. A Sc is symbolized by either a + or x.
Half Double Crochet (Hdc): This stitch is in between a single and double crochet stitch. It is made my yarning over, inserting the hook into the stitch or chain, yarn over and pull through the stitch, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. This stitch is symbolized by a T.
Double Crochet (Dc): This stitch is double the height of a Sc. To make this stitch yarn over, insert hook into stitch or chain, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. This stitch is symbolized by a T with a slanted cross mark (see chart images below).
Treble Crochet (Tr): This stitch is three times as tall as a Sc. To make this stitch yarn over two times, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through two loops, and finish with yarn over and pull through two loops. This stitch is symbolized by a T with two slanted cross marks (see below image).
Double Treble Crochet (Dtr): This is twice as tall as the treble stitch. To make this stitch yarn over three times, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through two loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, finish by yarning over and pulling through two loops. This stitch is symbolized by a T with three slanted cross marks (see below image).
I have seen a triple and quadruple Treble, but there are not chart symbols from the Craft Yarn Council for those, and therefore, I will not consider those as basic stitches for this blog. I have also determined that you can make a US Half Treble Crochet stitch also. The way that I made a half treble is as follows:
Yarn over two times, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through, yarn over and pull through two loops, to finish yarn over and pull through three loops.
I hope you found this helpful and Happy Hooking!
